Polished classic formula cars adorn the city centre of Most

On Friday afternoon, the “1. náměstí” square in downtown Most witnessed a gathering of 1930–1965 historic Grand Prix cars joined by specially built works cars driven by local racing drivers as well as individually constructed vehicles. This vintage car parade through the city centre made it possible for the fans to see the participants in the Most Historic Grand Prix taking place in its debut year at the Most Motor-racing Circuit over the weekend of 13 and 14 May.

This way, the spectators could admire an MG K3 Formula car dating from 1934 driven by John Gillett of Australia, a Cooper T 45 from 1958, a two years younger Cooper T 53 or a Lotus 18 from 1961 with Peter Horsman of Great Britain behind the steering wheel. The same admiration was displayed for machines presented by renowned Czech drivers, participants in a FAS ČR Czech Trophy regularity rally. Luděk Kopecký brought an MTX 1-05 car from 1980 to Most while Jaroslav Malý, a five years older MTX 1-02.

“I’m happy to see that you’ve turned out in great numbers and the atmosphere is great. I invite all of you to spend the weekend with us. Both the race programme and the side event programme will offer adrenaline-fuelled gift experiences that are definitely worth seeing,” Autodrom Most Chief Executive Officer Jiří Volovecký said addressing the visitors in the crowded square.

Saying hello to the spectators, there were also Jürgen Barth, the winner of the 1977 edition of the legendary 24-hour Le Mans race and a Most Historic Grand Prix race steward, and František Čečil, the Vice-President of the Autoclub of the Czech Republic. The two-time European historic hill climb champion will also take part in the regularity rally at Most. One of the highlights in the field will be a white Hakar car. This is really an original machine as there is just one unit. It was built by Alois Rieger and his son, Vojtěch, in Hradec Králové in 1950. Later, Vojtěch Rieger became a Czechoslovak rally legend in his role as Vladimír Hubáček’s co-driver.

The programme in the square, lasting about one hour, was presented by Petr Říbal who also provided background music. Apart from that, interest was aroused by a contest for ten tickets for the race weekend, a children’s prize competition as well as a driver autograph session. The event was not lacking in humour either. Ask by the presenter how he would double the value of his Trabant car, one of the ticket winners answered: “With a full tank of fuel.”

The Most Historic Grand Prix consists of several series. The main of them is a FIA Lurani Trophy race entered by Formula Junior cars from the 1950s and 1960s. The drivers battle for a European title. Further, there is a separate race with the participation of cars associated in the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association that used to start in Grands Prix from 1930 to 1960 and from 1961 to 1965.

British Grand Turismo cars will please the spectators’ eyes in a Triumph Competition and British HTGT race. Famous MG, Morgan, Triumph, Lotus and more GT cars are among the entrants. An ADAC HAIGO Cup race will offer battles between single-seaters and touring cars that used to take part in the former Eastern Bloc’s Peace and Friendship Cup, namely Formula Easter, Mondial and Škoda, VAZ Zhiguli, Melkus and Trabant touring cars. The above-mentioned FAS ČR Czech Trophy regularity rally will add to the varied programme of the race weekend.

The organisers also placed emphasis on a programme of side events for the entire families. Beside an aerobatic show performed by Petr Kopfstein, an excellent pilot and participant in the Red Bull Air Race Master Class world championship, there will be a number of attractions for children, prize competitions, helicopter sightseeing flights and a motor sport celebrity autograph session.
